Secure and agile infrastructure underpins Vendo greenfield payment initiation platform

About the Project

After stumbling across Adroit in a digital CTO and engineering community, Vendo engaged the team to help build its greenfield payment initiation platform, Mithyco. The goal was to develop a robust back-end payment processing system which also served as a third-party application programming interface (API) aggregator.

But with stringent European finance regulations to navigate, and no existing infrastructure to handle payment initiation or merchant admin, the build had to be carefully designed and implemented from scratch – with compliance, security, and resilience at the forefront. Delivered within an ambitious four-month timeline, the collaboration provided a fully functional minimum viable product (MVP) ready for real-world testing, validation, onboarding, and growth.

Vendo Case Study

About Vendo

Vendo Services provides intelligent payment processing services to ecommerce merchants across the globe, including clients in high-risk industries. Guiding companies through technical integrations, regulatory compliance, and capturing analytics, it helps them eliminate fraud, streamline payment approvals, and generate more revenue across the board.

The Challenge

Keen to expand its European footprint, Vendo needed an agile platform that could initiate payments securely and reliably across multiple banks, with the ability to scale into other markets and payment types. With no existing back-end infrastructure to build from, the clean slate project offered a world of flexibility. But at the same time, starting from scratch meant navigating a host of big (and unchartered) decisions – decisions Vendo needed to get right to build a solid foundation for growth.

First was navigating the complexity of different bank APIs in Europe. While regulations such as the revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2) require banks to provide open access – enabling third-party providers to access customer data and initiative transactions – the wider landscape is fragmented, with implementation varying significantly from one country (and institution) to the next.

Meanwhile, from PSD2 to GDPR and ISO 27001, compliance and security requirements needed to be built in from the start, keeping features like authentication, data privacy, and risk controls front and centre. Again, given the greenfield nature of the project – without any pre-existing infrastructure to adapt – each aspect required thoughtful architecting from the ground up.

The Solution

A detailed, two-week discovery phase marked the start of our collaboration with Vendo and Mithyco. Through stakeholder workshops, we gained a deep understanding of the platform key objectives, user needs, and compliance requirements. The subsequent technical landscape review then assessed Vendo existing AWS infrastructure, explored integration points, and identified any architectural constraints or opportunities.

With scalability, compliance, and speed of delivery as guiding principles, we made strategic technology choices to ensure Mithyco was both resilient and future ready. For the core back-end services, Java with Spring Boot provided a solid foundation, offering proven reliability for handling high transaction volumes while providing robust security features that aligned with PSD2 requirements.

For infrastructure, Kubernetes on AWS (EKS) gave the flexibility to scale services dynamically while keeping operational costs efficient. GitHub Actions powered our CI/CD pipelines, streamlining development with automated testing, deployment, and infrastructure updates – reducing manual errors and accelerating the release cycle.

The Results

Adroit successfully delivered a fully functional MVP for the platform, setting Vendo up to move quickly into testing and onboarding to take Mithyco one step closer to market. Developed in just four months, the project was delivered in an impressive timeline, given the scale of the platform, in addition to the strict compliance requirements and complex integrations with third-party APIs.

While Vendo has temporarily paused the project pending regulatory clarity – specifically surrounding the licensing framework expected from the Bank of Spain – the collaboration remains both productive and promising. The platform is still in its early stages, but the system is production ready, with core features including payment initiation, real-time transaction tracking, and merchant admin tools already live and integrated with bank APIs.

Cloud native, compliant, and built to scale across new markets and payment types, this foundation lays solid groundwork for ongoing growth. Vendo can offer merchants a fast, secure, and resilient way to initiate bank payments and maximise their ROI, with a clear path to expand to other end users in the future.
